Memorial sites for human rights and revolutionaries vandalized in Spain and Argentina
Memorial sites dedicated to historical figures and human rights have been targeted by vandalism in both Spain and Argentina.
In Oviedo, Spain, a monolith dedicated to Aida de la Fuente and the revolutionaries of October 1934 was defaced with graffiti. Local political groups, including IU-Convocatoria por Oviedo and the PSOE, have condemned the act, linking it to an escalation of political violence and hate speech from far-right groups. Representatives have called for immediate cleaning of the monument and increased institutional protection for democratic memory sites.
In Quilmes, Argentina, memorial elements at several educational institutions (EP23, ES 21, and Jardín 901) were vandalized. The damage included a commemorative tile for Rolo Merediz, a tile for Leo Leyes, and a mural created by students to mark 50 years since the civic-military dictatorship. The incident has been described by local community members as a political attack against the principles of memory, truth, and justice.
