Memory and Identity Museum files criminal complaint against tax authorities

The Memory and Identity Museum, dedicated to Pope John Paul II in Toruń, has filed a notification with the District Prosecutor's Office in Siedlce regarding potential criminal activity by tax authorities. The museum's legal representatives claim the institution is facing targeted scrutiny from the Mazovian Customs and Tax Office intended to force its closure.

According to the museum's legal counsel, a comprehensive two-year audit of all financial documents, including invoices and tax books, found no errors or falsifications. However, the tax office has since initiated a new audit covering a six-year period and has changed its legal arguments, shifting from questioning VAT deductions to alleging that the museum's tax books are unreliable.

Lidia Kochanowicz-Mańk, representative for the Lux Veritatis Foundation, stated that the conflicting arguments from tax officials suggest a politically motivated attempt to block the museum's funds. The museum faces the risk of having its assets frozen, which could lead to its liquidation.
