Memory loss and aging: distinguishing normal forgetfulness from dementia

Occasional forgetfulness, such as misplacing keys or struggling to recall a specific word, can be a normal part of the aging process. However, health experts suggest monitoring when memory issues begin to interfere with daily life or occur with increasing frequency.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) notes that while minor lapses are common, more serious problems are those that hinder routine activities. The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies several early signs of potential dementia, including forgetting recent events, losing objects, becoming disoriented in familiar places, having difficulty making decisions, or struggling to follow a conversation or instructions.
