Global memory market faces structural shifts driven by AI demand

The global semiconductor and memory market is experiencing structural shifts driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence. While Acer CEO Jason Chen argues that mainstream DDR4 and DDR5 supplies are sufficient and not facing a total shortage, other industry leaders warn of a deepening crisis. SK Hynix has projected that the memory shortage could persist until 2030, fueled by the intense demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) in AI data centers.

This demand is creating a supply squeeze for consumer electronics. Valve Corporation noted that production capacity is being diverted toward AI servers, making it difficult for small businesses and consumer hardware manufacturers to procure components. Arm has highlighted that memory capacity and bandwidth are becoming critical bottlenecks for edge AI inference.

Financial implications are significant: Samsung has reportedly increased DRAM and NAND prices by 30% to 40%, potentially impacting the cost of future devices like the iPhone. Meanwhile, in the financial markets, investor Michael Burry has increased his short position against Micron Technology, betting on a potential price collapse following a period of inflated costs.
