Memphis Depay faces Conmebol complaint after Libertadores match

Following a 1-1 draw against Estudiantes in Argentina during the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals, Corinthians faces several disciplinary and tactical challenges. Estudiantes has filed a formal complaint with Conmebol regarding Memphis Depay, alleging the Dutch striker engaged in unsportsmanlike conduct and provoked spectators by making an obscene gesture toward fans during a goal celebration.

Corinthians has acknowledged the notification but stated that the deadline for a defense is September 17, one day after the second leg in Brazil. Consequently, Depay is expected to be available for the decisive return match at the Neo Química Arena.

Additionally, the club will be without midfielder Raniele for the upcoming match due to a two-game suspension handed down by Conmebol following a red card in a previous round. The team also faces significant fines totaling approximately US$ 56,000 for various infractions. On the pitch, coach Fernando Diniz has been managing Depay’s physical conditioning, as the striker continues to work on regaining match rhythm following recent injury concerns.
