Memphis Depay’s Corinthians contract talks and World Cup squad inclusion

Corinthians are negotiating a new contract for forward Memphis Depay amid financial pressure. Club officials have discussed a clause limiting political statements and are weighing a salary package that could total around R$ 42 million, with the possibility of spreading payments over several years. The club also hopes to secure additional funding from partners to meet the offer. At the same time, Corinthians are working to lift recent transfer bans that threaten future player transactions and could affect the club’s market reputation.

Depay, who recently returned from a muscle injury, downplayed the financial focus of his contract talks, saying he has earned millions since his teenage years and wants to “re‑give” to the club. He expects the renewal discussion to stay private and emphasized his commitment to Corinthians as he prepares for the 2026 World Cup with the Dutch national team.

The Dutch coach Ronald Koeman confirmed Depay’s place in the final World Cup squad despite limited recent play, alongside other selections such as Wout Weghorst, the Timber twins, and goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. Analysts debate the starting striker choice, favoring Donyell Malen over Depay. The squad will open the tournament on 14 June against Japan.

If Depay’s World Cup participation continues through the group stage, Corinthians could receive roughly US$ 253 000 (about R$ 1.2 million) from FIFA’s Club Benefits Programme, with additional payouts if the Netherlands advance further.
