Memphis Depay’s fitness and contract talks ahead of World Cup
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman said Memphis Depay is progressing toward full fitness but is not yet at 100% readiness for the 2026 World Cup. Koeman emphasized that the striker, the national team’s all‑time top scorer, remains a key option for the Dutch squad. Depay was on the bench for the recent friendlies against Algeria, where he came on for the second half, and against Uzbekistan, where he did not play, accumulating only 49 minutes of action.
At club level, Brazilian side Corinthians has formally offered Depay a contract renewal with a reduced salary, fully funded by the club and not reliant on external sponsors. The proposal awaits the player’s response. Depay has expressed a desire to stay at the club, stating his affection for Corinthians and his intention to remain for the World Cup.
The Netherlands open Group F of the tournament on 12 June against Japan, followed by matches versus Sweden and Tunisia.
