Memphis Safe Task Force to remain active indefinitely

The Memphis Safe Task Force, a joint operation involving federal, state, and local law enforcement, will remain active in Memphis indefinitely. During a one-year anniversary roundtable, Attorney General Todd Blanche and U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn announced that the task force will continue to provide manpower and funding to the city.

Proponents of the initiative, including Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis, report that crime rates have dropped across various metrics since the deployment of federal agencies and National Guard troops. Reports indicate that the task force has facilitated significant arrest numbers, including over 1,500 gang members.

However, the operation has faced criticism from community advocates. Some residents and advocacy groups, such as Vecindarios 901, have raised concerns regarding the focus on nonviolent crimes and traffic stops. Critics argue that a high percentage of arrests involve nonviolent offenses and immigration-related issues, which they claim contributes to jail overcrowding and places financial strain on the city’s working-class population.
