Memòria de Mallorca resigns from democratic memory commissions
The association Memòria de Mallorca has announced its resignation from the two regional democratic memory commissions in the Balearic Islands. The group's president, Maria Antònia Oliver, stated that the regional government has relegated memorial entities to a purely testimonial role and has distorted the functions of these bodies.
The association claims that its proposals and inquiries often go unanswered and that certain actions are executed without prior consultation. Specifically, they noted that a proposal to install memorials in Palma to honor victims of forced disappearance and fascist aviation bombings was excluded from a recent meeting agenda.
Memòria de Mallorca also cited the removal of the General Directorate of Democratic Memory and the office for victim assistance as reasons for their departure. They further criticized the government's intention to repeal the regional democratic memory law and noted discrepancies in the inauguration of the Columbari de la Dignitat, which failed to include explicit references to the 1936 coup d'état.
