Menai Suspension Bridge closed after overweight vehicle and staff harassment

On July 27, 2026 a driver claimed his vehicle weighed 6.8 tonnes – within the 7.5‑tonne limit for the historic Menai Suspension Bridge – but investigations revealed the truck actually weighed about 15 tonnes, more than double the allowed weight. The mis‑statement prompted a two‑hour closure of the 200‑year‑old bridge during rush hour, causing significant traffic delays on the A55.

The following evening, bridge workers were allegedly abused and harassed by a member of the public, leading UK Highways A55 Ltd to suspend traffic management operations for staff safety. The contractor warned that further incidents could force additional closures. Traffic Wales, North Wales Police and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency were involved in both the weight‑limit enforcement and the response to the harassment.
