Menai Suspension Bridge repair work faces abuse and weight‑limit violations

Repairs to the 200‑year‑old Menai Suspension Bridge in Wales, linking Anglesey to the mainland, are ongoing and expected to continue until 2027. A 7.5‑tonne weight limit has been imposed to protect the structure while heavy gantries are restored.

Authorities have reported repeated abuse and harassment of staff monitoring traffic, prompting temporary suspension of traffic management. Incidents include a 15‑tonne vehicle that crossed the bridge despite the limit and a 14‑tonne coach that was stopped by a local pedestrian after workers were withdrawn from the site. Officials warned that further non‑compliance could lead to the bridge being closed and referred harassment cases to North Wales Police.

The situation has caused frustration among local motorists and residents, who face detours and congestion while the repairs proceed.
