Menderes Deputy Mayor Asuman Şen elected following mayoral arrest
Following the arrest and removal of Menderes Mayor İlkay Çiçek due to a corruption investigation, a contentious election was held to select a deputy mayor. Asuman Şen of the AKP won the position in the fourth round of voting, securing 15 votes.
The election process was marked by significant tension, including physical altercations between council members and the departure of CHP members from the hall during voting rounds. The victory of the AKP candidate has shifted control of the Menderes Municipality from the CHP to the AKP.
CHP Spokesperson Müslim Sarı blamed the loss on the YENİ Parti, stating that the CHP had instructed its members to support the YENİ Parti candidate to prevent the municipality from passing to the AKP. The CHP is currently evaluating disciplinary actions against members who failed to follow these instructions. Additionally, CHP member Harun Bila faces expulsion proceedings after attending an AKP victory celebration.
