Argentina: Judge orders government to comply with University Financing Law

Federal Judge Martín Cormick has issued an ultimatum to the Argentine government, granting a five-day deadline to comply with the University Financing Law (Ley 27.795). The ruling mandates the update of salaries for teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as the restoration of student scholarship programs.

Cormick determined that documentation provided by the Ministry of Human Capital was insufficient to prove compliance with a previous injunction. If the administration of Javier Milei fails to meet this deadline, the court warned it will impose daily economic fines (astreintes) on the state.

University unions and the National Interuniversity Council (CIN) have welcomed the decision, noting that a salary increase of approximately 33% to 33.4% is required to recover lost purchasing power. Despite the judicial progress, labor unions have confirmed that a new Federal University March is scheduled for October 15 to continue protesting against budget cuts and salary stagnation.
