Mendoza authorities map active geological faults to mitigate seismic risk

Researchers from Conicet and the Mendoza provincial government have successfully mapped geological faults in the Greater Mendoza metropolitan area. The study identifies active sectors and establishes a 50-meter safety buffer on each side of these fractures to mitigate disaster risks.

Authorities have warned that the primary vulnerability in the region is not a lack of social preparedness, but rather clandestine construction. Building without professional oversight or municipal control increases the risk that structures will fail to withstand seismic tension. Officials are calling for reinforced inspections and the consolidation of the Unified Construction Code to manage urban density safely.
