Mendoza crops threatened by sub-zero temperatures

Sub-zero temperatures are expected to threaten crops in Mendoza, Argentina, this coming weekend. The Dirección de Contingencias Climáticas has issued alerts for several departments, noting that frost could impact crops currently in the flowering stage.

On Sunday, September 6, negative temperatures are anticipated in Luján de Cuyo, Santa Rosa, Tupungato, Tunuyán, San Carlos, San Rafael, and General Alvear. The cold weather is expected to expand to Lavalle and Maipú on Monday, September 7.

Provincial authorities have issued several recommendations to minimize production damage, including keeping soil moist and free of weeds to better retain heat. Farmers are advised to monitor temperatures closely to determine when to activate irrigation, heaters, or ventilation towers. Authorities also reminded producers that burning tires as an anti-frost method is illegal due to its inefficiency and the release of toxic gases.
