Mendoza deputy proposes Sunday pedestrian corridors

Daniel Llaver, a provincial deputy for the Radical Civic Union (UCR), has introduced a legislative project to create the “Mendoza en Movimiento” program. The initiative aims to establish a metropolitan network of corridors reserved exclusively for non-motorized mobility, such as pedestrians, bicycles, scooters, and manual wheelchairs.

The proposal suggests that on Sundays and holidays, from 07:00 to 16:00, strategic avenues and streets would be closed to motor vehicles. The project seeks to promote public health by encouraging physical activity to combat chronic diseases, while also reducing atmospheric and noise pollution.

Implementation is planned to be progressive, starting with pilot programs in short stretches of two to five kilometers within the Mendoza Metropolitan Area, including departments such as Godoy Cruz, Luján, Maipú, Las Heras, Guaymallén, and Ciudad. The plan ensures continued access for emergency vehicles, security forces, and residents living along the corridors. The initiative draws inspiration from international models like the recreational cycling networks in Bogotá.
