Mendoza faces water shortage as winter snowfall plummets

The Argentine province of Mendoza is experiencing an unusually dry winter, with snow accumulation in the Andes measured at only 0%‑15% of the historical average. At the Horcones station, the typical 161 cm of snow has fallen to just 10 cm, prompting ski resorts to delay openings and rely on artificial snow.

The deficit threatens more than tourism. Snowpack is the primary source that recharges rivers supplying drinking water, irrigating crops, and powering hydroelectric plants. Researchers cite a decade‑long drought that began in 2010, during which average snowfall has been about 30% below normal levels. A cold front expected later this week may bring 2‑3.5 m of snow in some river basins, but the overall shortfall remains a serious concern for the province’s water security.
