Mendoza flower production concentrates in three departments

Mendoza has established itself as Argentina's second-largest producer of cut flowers, trailing only Buenos Aires. With the arrival of spring, the sector is entering a period of peak activity, supplying local markets as well as neighboring provinces including San Juan, San Luis, La Rioja, and Neuquén.

Production is highly concentrated in three departments: Maipú, Guaymallén, and Las Heras, which together account for 94.5% of the province's cultivated flower surface. Maipú holds 47%, Guaymallén 28%, and Las Heras 19%. San Rafael contributes approximately 2.6% of the provincial total.

Key species cultivated include alstroemerias, lisianthus, lilies, chrysanthemums, gerberas, gypsophila, limonium, carnations, and roses. Producers note that Mendoza's climate allows for outdoor cultivation, which reduces costs associated with greenhouses, though it increases vulnerability to weather events such as hail, storms, and wind.
