Mendoza government submits San Romeleo copper project for legislative approval
The Mendoza provincial government has submitted the Environmental Impact Declaration (DIA) for the San Romeleo Copper Project to the local Legislature for ratification. Located in the Malargüe district, the small-scale mining initiative is proposed by LABSA SA and will be operated by AREX MINING S.A.
The project aims to process approximately 40 tons of mineral per day, with estimated reserves of 257,000 tons and an expected exploitation horizon of about 20 years. The operation requires an initial investment of USD 3 million. A primary goal of the project is to produce copper sulfate, a raw material essential for agricultural fungicides, specifically supporting Mendoza’s viticulture and organic farming sectors.
Minister of Energy and Environment Jimena Latorre stated that the project has completed all required environmental evaluation stages involving technical, scientific, and academic bodies. She noted that a public hearing was held with significant citizen participation, reporting that over 90% of expressions were in favor of the project.
