Mendoza health center issues diabetes medication to pregnant woman by mistake
A medical error at the Dr. Aldo Dapás Health Center No. 30 in Godoy Cruz, Mendoza, resulted in a pregnant woman receiving 60 mg of gliclazide, a diabetes medication, instead of the prescribed 1 mg of folic acid. The incident occurred on February 3, 2025, and was documented in an administrative investigation which concluded the error posed a severe health risk to both the mother and the developing fetus, as gliclazide is strictly discouraged during pregnancy.
The provincial government formalized the case through Decree 2239, signed by Governor Alfredo Cornejo and Health Minister Rodolfo Montero. The investigation, which included medical documentation, patient notes, and pharmacy inventory audits, confirmed the error by identifying a shortage of gliclazide and a surplus of folic acid in the facility's stock.
As a result, the disciplinary board recommended a 30-day suspension without pay for the pharmacy technician involved. However, the effective application of this sanction is currently pending judicial authorization because the employee holds union protection as a delegate for the Association of State Workers (ATE).
