Mendoza increases traffic fines, with alcohol penalties reaching $6.6 million

The Government of Mendoza has increased the value of the Fixed Unit (Unidad Fija, UF) from $500 to $600 to update traffic fine amounts. This adjustment, implemented by the Ministry of Security and Justice, aims to strengthen road safety prevention and increase the deterrent effect of sanctions.

Under the new scale, minor infractions are set at 100 UF ($60,000), with a 40% discount available for payments made within three days. Serious infractions cost 700 UF ($420,000), while very serious offenses reach 1,000 UF ($600,000). Drivers committing multiple simultaneous infractions may face fines of 1,500 UF ($900,000).

The most significant increases target driving under the influence of alcohol. Depending on the blood alcohol concentration, fines for motorists can range from $1,800,000 to $6,600,000. Claudio Machuca, head of the Highway Police, noted that these measures are part of a broader strategy involving increased technological controls and heightened surveillance to reduce road fatalities.
