Mendoza launches hydroponics cluster for sustainable agriculture

The Government of Mendoza has officially launched a Hydroponics Cluster to promote sustainable, soilless agriculture. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving the provincial government, the National University of Cuyo (UNCuyo) Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, and the National Agricultural Technology Institute (INTA).

The cluster aims to connect local producers, suppliers, scientists, and distributors to foster technical assistance, professional training, and efficient distribution channels. By integrating technology into the field, the initiative seeks to address regional climate and water challenges. Hydroponic systems, which use nutrient-rich aqueous solutions instead of soil, can save between 70% and 90% of water compared to traditional irrigation methods.

Currently, Mendoza has approximately 20,000 square meters dedicated to hydroponics. The northern region holds the largest share at 42% (8,400 square meters), followed by the southern region at 33% (6,600 square meters), the Uco Valley at 22%, and the eastern zone at 3%. The cluster will work to identify sector challenges and develop public policies and financial instruments to support growing agricultural enterprises.
