Mendoza polar wave: schools remain open despite extreme cold

The Dirección General de Escuelas (DGE) confirmed that classes in Mendoza will not be suspended on Wednesday or Thursday, even as an intense polar air mass brings forecast lows of 7 °C and 1 °C on Wednesday and a possible drop to –5 °C on Thursday. Minister of Education, Culture, Infancies and DGE Tadeo García Zalazar said decisions are made in real‑time, following a strict protocol with civil defence and climate‑contingency agencies, and that no other Argentine jurisdiction plans pre‑emptive closures.

The weather models also indicate a chance of snow or sleet in the high mountain areas and a 10‑40 % probability of such phenomena reaching the Gran Mendoza plain. The provincial government will reinforce social‑assistance operations, directing municipal transit staff to patrol streets and aid vulnerable residents during the cold spell.
