Labor and social unrest rise across Venezuela and Argentina
Various social and labor unrests are occurring across South America. In Venezuela, workers, teachers, and retirees have organized mass demonstrations in Caracas and other states. Protesters are demanding significant salary increases and dignified pensions, arguing that current wages are insufficient due to economic instability. Key demands include the incorporation of government bonuses into base salaries and the recognition of collective bargaining agreements. Additionally, political demonstrators have marched to demand the return of opposition leader María Corina Machado and the establishment of a presidential election schedule.
In Argentina, social tension is rising in several provinces. In Catamarca, a multisectoral coalition of workers, retirees, and environmental groups is protesting against government austerity measures and resource extraction. In Río Negro, retirees are opposing a project to modify the provincial health insurance (Ipross), citing fears of privatization and reduced service quality. Meanwhile, in Mendoza, pensioners continue regular marches to demand benefits equal to the food basket and free medication. Other local reports include a federal operation against cigarette smuggling in Concordia and Posadas, and a theft of equipment at a digital center in Clorinda.
