Mendoza updates reserve management and Aconcagua permit sales

The Mendoza Government has approved an updated management plan for the Manzano-Portillo de Piuquenes Provincial Reserve, covering the period from 2026 to 2036. Developed by an interdisciplinary team from the Ministry of Energy and Environment, the plan addresses recent challenges including increased tourism, human pressure on specific sectors, and the emergence of the invasive alga Didymosphenia geminata.

A primary focus of the new plan is the protection of water resources, including glaciers, wetlands, and rivers, which are vital for the high Andean ecosystems and the Valle de Uco productive oasis. The reserve will implement internal zoning, categorizing areas into controlled use, restricted use, and maximum conservation zones.

Simultaneously, the Directorate of Protected Areas has opened the early sale of permits for the 2026-2027 summer season at Aconcagua Provincial Park. Available from September 14 to September 30, these permits cover Ascent and Long Trekking categories. Prices vary by residency and route, with foreign ascent fees for Quebrada de Horcones set at USD 950 and Quebrada de Vacas at USD 1,290. Permits can be acquired through the Aconpass system or the Integral Operating System (SIO).
