Menelaos Menelau claims UN buffer zone is Republic of Cyprus territory

Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelau has asserted that the UN buffer zone in Cyprus is territory belonging to the Republic of Cyprus. Speaking before the Greek Cypriot Parliament’s Migrants Committee, Menelau stated that the zone, which covers approximately 346 square kilometers and is home to over 10,000 residents, exists because the Turkish military withdrew under a deconflicting mandate following UN Resolution 186 (1964).

Menelau argued that the Republic of Cyprus maintains authority within the zone, exercising it in cooperation with the UN Peacekeeping Force. During a legal seminar at the University of Nicosia, experts discussed the complexities of this status. Dean Ahilleas Emilianidis noted that the UN views the buffer zone as a neutral area under peacekeeping responsibility, a doctrine adopted in the 1990s to prevent militarization. This differing interpretation between the UN and the Greek Cypriot administration often leads to disagreements regarding what constitutes a violation of the buffer zone's status.
