Meniscus injuries and modern treatment approaches in Slovakia
Medical experts are highlighting the importance of meniscus health and the shift toward preservative treatment methods for knee injuries. Menisci act as natural shock absorbers between the femur and tibia, providing stability and distributing pressure to protect joint cartilage.
Orthopedic surgeon MUDr. Michal Mitro notes that symptoms often include pain on the inner side of the knee, trauma such as sprains, or a sensation of the knee locking. He emphasizes that early diagnosis is critical, particularly for surgical repair, as the healing potential decreases significantly if treatment is delayed beyond the first three months.
Ján Grauzel, chairman of the Slovak Society of Arthroscopy and Sports Traumatology, explains that modern medicine is moving away from total meniscus removal. Because the loss of meniscus tissue significantly increases the risk of osteoarthritis and eventual knee replacement, surgeons now prioritize mini-invasive reconstruction and repair to preserve as much tissue as possible.
