Menlo Park residents seek US sanctions to block Russian developer's skyscraper
Residents of Menlo Park, California, are calling for federal authorities to impose sanctions on Vitaly Yusufov to halt the construction of a proposed 39-story skyscraper at 80 Willow Road. The developer, Yusufov, is the son of Igor Yusufov, a former Russian energy minister and founder of Fund Energy who is already sanctioned in Ukraine and Canada.
The planned development on the former Sunset Magazine headquarters site would include 665 apartments, a hotel, office space, and a preschool. At 461 feet, the tallest tower would be the highest building between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Local opponents have expressed concerns regarding increased traffic, shadows cast on neighboring homes, and the loss of open views. Some residents plan to escalate their opposition by raising concerns with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS).
