Menopause and its impact on ocular and oral health

In observance of World Menopause Day on October 18, health experts are highlighting the often-overlooked impact of hormonal changes on women's physical well-being, specifically regarding ocular and oral health.

Research from Dexeus Dona involving nearly 2,000 women found that 64% of those in perimenopause or menopause experienced symptoms consistent with dry eye, yet only one in four had received a prior diagnosis. Globally, the prevalence of dry eye is estimated at 79%, rising to over 80% in postmenopausal women. Symptoms include irritation, redness, itching, light sensitivity, and blurred vision, which can interfere with daily tasks like driving or reading.

Beyond vision, studies indicate that oral dryness affects approximately 70% of women in this life stage. Other significant symptoms include loss of muscle strength and changes in sexual health. Experts emphasize that these symptoms should not be dismissed as mere aging and recommend individualized care and professional medical evaluations to manage the specific needs of each woman.
