Italy survey reveals menopause symptoms remain a social taboo
A survey conducted by AstraRicerche for Bayer Italia, involving 1,000 Italian women aged 50 to 70, reveals that while menopause is discussed more openly than in previous years, significant stigmas and knowledge gaps remain. Although 70.6% of respondents feel there is more openness regarding the topic, 65.2% believe the current level of conversation is insufficient.
Many women continue to hide their symptoms due to the perception that menopause is a purely natural phase that does not require medical attention. Approximately 38.1% of women reported concealing their symptoms, and 30.8% of those experiencing disturbances have not discussed them with a doctor. Common symptoms reported include hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood swings, and decreased libido.
Rossella Nappi, President of the International Menopause Society, emphasized that menopause is a public health issue. She noted that symptoms like hot flashes and insomnia can impact quality of life and are linked to cardiovascular risks. Experts stress the importance of medical dialogue to manage these symptoms through tailored hormonal or non-hormonal therapies.
