Menopause care gap affects millions of women in Mexico
In Mexico, approximately 60 million women between the ages of 45 and 65 are undergoing the climacteric transition without comprehensive medical attention. Data attributed to the Ministry of Health indicates a significant diagnostic gap, with only 22% of women in this stage able to identify their symptoms, leaving 78% without professional guidance or diagnosis.
Menopause and the preceding perimenopause involve hormonal shifts that can cause a wide range of physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms. Common manifestations include hot flashes, night sweats, irregular menstrual cycles, insomnia, vaginal dryness, and mood swings. Cognitive effects, such as “brain fog” or difficulty concentrating, are also frequently reported.
Experts note that these changes can impact daily life, including sleep quality, interpersonal relationships, and workplace productivity. Because symptoms vary significantly in intensity and type among individuals, medical professionals emphasize the importance of seeking specialized care to manage the transition effectively.
