Germany to fund menopause research with 21 million euros
German authorities and experts are calling for increased support and research regarding menopause and women's health. Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär announced plans to fund menopause research with 21 million euros starting in 2027, targeting several research locations across Germany to address the needs of approximately nine million women.
The Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency has issued a policy paper titled ‘Gleichberechtigt in den Wechseljahren’ (Equal in Menopause), urging a national strategy to prevent workplace discrimination. Experts note that many women face professional challenges due to symptoms like hot flashes and sleep disturbances, yet often lack adequate support or medical guidance.
To address these gaps, the Federal Ministry of Health is looking to integrate ‘gender-sensitive medicine’ into medical training and improve data collection through the Robert Koch Institute. Additionally, medical professionals are highlighting the need for better diagnostic accuracy, as studies suggest women's physical symptoms are frequently misclassified as psychosomatic compared to men.
