Menopause health: Brain aging links and benefits of resistance training

Menopause involves significant physiological changes, including hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and metabolic shifts. Experts emphasize that resistance and weight-bearing exercises are crucial during this transition to combat the loss of muscle mass and bone density, particularly in the hips and spine.

Recent research published in Nature Medicine by University of California scientists has identified 16 specific molecules in the blood that change during menopause and are linked to brain aging. Higher levels of these molecules in women have been associated with poorer memory, cognitive function, and a 15% increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. While the study does not suggest menopause causes dementia, it offers a potential pathway for identifying women at higher risk for cognitive decline decades in advance.
