Menopause impacts sexual intimacy and partner relationships

Research presented at The Menopause Society annual congress in San Diego highlights how menopause affects sexual intimacy and relationship dynamics. A study conducted in Canada and the United Kingdom reveals that many men feel unprepared and emotionally affected by the changes in their partners' sexual desire and physical well-being during this stage.

The findings indicate a significant lack of awareness among men. In Canada, 68% of surveyed men reported knowing little to nothing about menopause before their partners experienced symptoms. In the United Kingdom, only 43% of respondents felt they understood the stage well enough to provide adequate support.

Researchers identified four recurring challenges: loss of physical intimacy, emotional difficulties, relationship tensions, and a lack of educational resources specifically designed for men. The study suggests that insufficient communication and information can lead to emotional distance, even when there is a willingness to support the partner.
