Menopause impacts women's financial security and life decisions
Menopause is increasingly recognized for its significant impact on women's financial stability and major life decisions. As women navigate perimenopause and menopause, often during the final 10 to 15 years of their careers, they face a convergence of pressures including career shifts, changing family structures, and the need for increased pension and investment growth.
Beyond direct health costs, the financial burden often stems from indirect factors such as supporting aging parents, caregiving responsibilities, or managing life changes like divorce. This stage of life frequently coincides with a reassessment of long-term priorities, leading to a phenomenon sometimes referred to as ‘menodivorce.’ In the UK, approximately 63% of divorce applications are now filed by wives, with many women over 50 initiating proceedings as they re-evaluate their relationships alongside other milestones like retirement or children leaving home.
While increased financial independence provides more freedom for these decisions, the practicalities remain complex. Symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, and reduced confidence can complicate both daily life and the long-term financial planning required during these significant life transitions.
