Menopause linked to increased joint and muscle pain
A meta-analysis involving 37 studies from 22 countries and over 93,000 women has highlighted a significant increase in muscle and joint pain during menopause. The research indicates that while 40 percent of women in the premenopause stage reported such symptoms, the figures rose to 57 percent during perimenopause and 59 percent after menopause.
Researchers suggest a link between these symptoms and estrogen levels, as estrogen receptors are located not only in reproductive organs but also in bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. While the study shows a correlation rather than direct causation, the complexity of hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause is a key area of focus. A 2024 review has even introduced the term ‘musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause’ to describe the combination of joint and muscle pain, loss of bone and muscle mass, and changes to connective tissues.
