Menopause study reveals sudden physiological cliff in women's health
A large-scale international study published in Nature Medicine reveals that menopause is characterized by a sudden 'physiological cliff' rather than a gradual decline. Analyzing 300 million data points from 1.3 million women in the United States and Israel, researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science found that 52 out of 90 tracked physiological parameters undergo abrupt changes around the final menstrual period. These synchronous shifts impact multiple organ systems, including bone metabolism, liver and kidney function, blood chemistry, and cholesterol levels.
While the acute transition occurs at the final menstrual period, hormonal fluctuations begin much earlier. Significant drops in anti-Müllerian hormone can be detected approximately 15 years prior, and follicle-stimulating hormone levels begin to climb roughly 14 years before the transition.
Beyond biological findings, global reports highlight the socio-economic and professional impacts of menopause. In Mexico, a study found that 67% of women report menopause symptoms affecting their work performance. In Argentina, authorities are emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach to address the transition, noting its influence on social and economic conditions. Experts stress the importance of early education and medical support to manage symptoms like sleep disturbances, hot flashes, and increased risks of osteoporosis and cardiovascular issues.
