Menorca lobster fishing season shows improvement

The lobster fishing season in Menorca concluded on August 31, with local fishing guilds reporting a positive campaign. Representatives from the guilds in Fornells, Ciutadella, and Maó noted a slight improvement compared to the previous year.

In Fornells, the largest volume producer, the total weight of lobster caught had already surpassed last year's figures a week before the season ended. In Ciutadella, small-scale fishers reported a nearly 40 percent increase in catches, partly due to the return of three vessels that were inactive last year.

Prices for lobster remain stable, with fishermen receiving between 60 and 65 euros per kilo, though direct sales to restaurants can yield higher returns. In Maó and Fornells, prices range between 65 and 70 euros per kilo. Regarding the red shrimp season, assessments varied; while Maó reported stable volumes despite summer water warming, Ciutadella noted different trends in catch levels.
