Menorca police carry out eviction amid housing law controversy

A large police presence was deployed in Maó, Menorca, on Wednesday to carry out an eviction at Camí des Castell, number 66. The operation involved more than fifteen officers from the National and Local Police, resulting in the closure of several streets, including Camí des Castell between Sant Joan and Comerç streets.

After occupants failed to respond to police requests, a locksmith was called to open the property. Officers entered the premises, though it appeared to be empty at the time. The eviction is considered controversial due to recent changes in national housing regulations. Specifically, Royal Decree-Law 26/2026, published in the Official State Gazette, extends protections against evictions for vulnerable individuals without alternative housing until December 31, 2030. This law allows for the suspension of evictions if specific requirements are met to protect vulnerable households, which may include minors, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
