Menorca residents protest tourism saturation in Ciutadella

More than 800 people gathered in the center of Ciutadella, Menorca, to protest against tourism saturation and its impact on the island. Organized as part of the ‘Via Menorca’ campaign by the GOB, the demonstration highlighted four primary concerns: housing accessibility, mass tourism, job precariousness, and the depletion of aquifers.

Data presented during the event indicated an 80% increase in tourist volume over the last fifteen years. Protesters also noted that summer water extraction prevents aquifers from recovering during the winter months.

While the debate often centers on whether tourism is necessary for the local economy, discussions have shifted toward the management of the ecotax. Residents are calling for greater transparency regarding how tax revenue is invested, citing ongoing issues with youth housing, urban infrastructure, and summer mobility problems.
