Menorca tourism reaches record levels amid local social tension

Menorca is approaching a record-breaking tourism season, with visitor numbers between April and July nearing one million. This represents a 4.5 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025. The growth is largely driven by a strong recovery in the British market, which has seen a 15.7 percent increase in visitors, and a rising preference for organized holiday packages through tour operators.

However, this economic success has triggered growing social discontent among local residents. While the sector drives development, the high volume of visitors places significant strain on public infrastructure and services, such as waste management, lighting, and roads. Residents face rising costs of living, housing competition from second homes, and increased congestion. The OECD has noted that high tourism pressure can negatively impact the quality of life and resources available to local communities.
