Menstrual cycle awareness and self-care importance
Understanding the menstrual cycle involves more than tracking periods; it includes monitoring changes in energy, sleep, emotions, and physical sensations to identify personal patterns. An initiative by Nosotras and Masglo, titled “Para cada fase, un color,” encourages using daily beauty rituals to connect with the individual experience of the cycle, acknowledging that experiences vary between people and months.
According to gynecologist Mónica Lotero, recognizing these patterns provides valuable information regarding overall well-being. Furthermore, a 2022-2023 Essity Hygiene and Health Survey in Colombia revealed that 46% of menstruating individuals desire improved access to health services and hygiene products. Access to accurate information remains a critical component of menstrual wellness.
Biological curiosities also play a role in the cycle. Research published in PLoS One suggests that vocal pitch can change during the cycle, often becoming deeper during ovulation and more hoarse during menstruation. Additionally, menstrual cramps are caused by prostaglandins, and managing these through anti-inflammatories can mitigate pain. Experts also note that while menstrual blood itself is odorless, changes in vaginal pH and bacteria can cause odors, for which daily hygiene is recommended over scented products.
