Menstrual health and economic costs impact women in Latin America

Discussions regarding menstrual health and its economic impact are highlighting the challenges faced by women and adolescents in Latin America. In Mexico, research conducted by INTIMINA and Censuswide indicates that 65% of surveyed girls have felt shame or the need to hide their period at school, while only 11% reported never feeling embarrassed. The initiative emphasizes the importance of including menstrual wellness in back-to-school preparations to reduce anxiety and promote informed decision-making.

In Ecuador, the economic burden of menstrual management is significant. According to a UNICEF survey of 3,605 adolescents, monthly spending varies, with nearly 20% of respondents spending more than $20 per month. Experts from Plan International Ecuador note that over a lifetime, a woman may use between 6,800 and 9,100 sanitary pads. The total cost of menstrual health extends beyond products to include analgesics, hygiene supplies, water, and soap, making access to basic infrastructure a critical factor in managing health.
