Menstrual health awareness focuses on sleep quality and endometriosis

Health discussions are highlighting the impact of menstrual cycles on overall well-being, specifically regarding sleep quality and chronic conditions like endometriosis.

In Guayaquil, Ecuador, an initiative led by Nosotras® addressed ‘Periodsomnia,’ a term describing sleep disturbances linked to the menstrual cycle. Experts noted that hormonal changes, cramps, and physical discomfort can lead to difficulty falling or staying asleep, daytime drowsiness, and reduced sleep duration. This connection is supported by scientific research, including a 2023 systematic review in BMC Women’s Health.

Additionally, medical experts are warning against normalizing debilitating menstrual pain. Intense pain that interferes with daily activities, work, or school can be a symptom of endometriosis. This chronic condition affects approximately 10% of women of reproductive age globally. Symptoms may include pelvic pain outside of menstruation, heavy bleeding, pain during intercourse, and abdominal swelling.
