Mental health services face regional challenges in Latin America

Various regions are addressing mental health challenges through policy changes, community initiatives, and crisis management. In Argentina, health officials are highlighting the rise in suicide rates among youth, with Minister Nicolás Kreplak noting that suicide is now a leading cause of death for those aged 15 to 35. In Formosa and Ramos Mejía, educational and community workshops are focusing on suicide prevention and the 'pedagogy of care.'

Financial and structural issues also impact care. In Buenos Aires province, IOMA is facing criticism; while Minister Kreplak defends its increased coverage of high-cost medications, the Hemodynamics service in Trenque Lauquen reports a debt of 300 million pesos, threatening service continuity. Meanwhile, in Colombia, the implementation of Law 2460 of 2025 aims to improve access by allowing direct psychological consultations without a general practitioner's referral, though experts warn of professional shortages.

In Puerto Rico, the ASSMCA reported a significant increase in calls to the PAS Line, with residents expressing anxiety and distress linked to drought and water rationing.
