Mental health and social connection in older adults

Social isolation and loneliness among older adults are significant factors affecting both mental and physical health. Experts warn that prolonged loneliness can lead to increased risks of depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, sleep and appetite disturbances, cardiovascular issues, and a weakened immune system.

July Caballero Peralta, director of the Mental Health Directorate at the Ministry of Health (Minsa), emphasizes that emotional well-being is a critical component of healthy aging. She advises against assuming that sadness, isolation, or a lack of interest are merely natural consequences of aging. Instead, these should be viewed as signs that require attention and support.

Maintaining social connections through family, friends, and community activities is essential to reducing isolation. Key warning signs that older adults may need assistance include persistent feelings of loneliness, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, significant changes in sleep or appetite, and withdrawal from social communication.
