Mental health awareness and suicide prevention efforts highlighted for September

September marks Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a period dedicated to promoting mental health transparency and reducing the social stigma that prevents individuals from seeking help. The Mental Health Commission of Canada estimates that 60 per cent of people with mental health issues do not seek assistance, often due to fear of stigma.

Efforts to combat this include community-based initiatives and 24/7 crisis counseling services. Organizations such as Crisis Services and the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Erie County work to increase awareness, expand training, and connect individuals with resources. Experts suggest that suicide prevention can begin with simple actions, such as noticing behavioral changes—including withdrawal, mood shifts, or expressions of hopelessness—and engaging in non-judgmental listening and direct communication.
