Mental health challenges and professional shortages in Spain
Mental health challenges in Spain are becoming increasingly visible as public discourse on anxiety, depression, and stress grows. According to the AXA Group's 'World Mental Health Report' published in July 2026, 25% of Spaniards suffer from stress, while 28% of the total population experiences anxiety and depression.
Scientific research supports mindfulness and physical exercise as effective long-term strategies for stress reduction. Meta-analyses from 2026 indicate that mindfulness techniques are “effective and scalable strategies to reduce perceived stress in non-clinical adults.” Additionally, mind-body practices like yoga have been shown to reduce cortisol levels.
Despite rising awareness, Spain faces a significant shortage of mental health professionals. The country has approximately six clinical psychologists per 100,000 inhabitants, significantly lower than the European average of 18. This deficit has led to long waiting lists in the public sector, creating a risk of a two-tier system where consistent psychological care may become a luxury accessible primarily to those who can afford private services.
