Mental health challenges persist in Chile and Costa Rica

In Chile, mental health remains a critical public health priority. Data indicates that 10.7% of the population has experienced suicidal ideation, while 3.9% have attempted suicide. Depression affects approximately 13% of the adult population. Experts from the Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organization emphasize that prevention requires strengthening social support networks, healthy work environments, and timely access to care to reduce the stigma associated with seeking help.

In Costa Rica, the government has established the National Mental Health Policy 2024-2034 and an Action Plan for 2025-2029 to promote prevention and recovery through a human rights perspective. While legislative forums have been held to discuss institutional responses and resource allocation, the country continues to face challenges in translating these policies into improved living conditions and reducing waiting lists for services.
