Mental health challenges persist in the Dominican Republic
Mental health remains a critical pending issue in the Dominican Republic, characterized by high costs for consultations and a persistent social taboo regarding psychological and psychiatric care. Clinical psychologist Holando Gesualdo has noted the visible presence of individuals with severe mental health issues in public spaces, alongside rising levels of anxiety, depression, and violence in various social settings.
Legislative progress has stalled, as the proposed modification to Law 12-06 on Mental Health has remained in Congress for a year without significant advancement. While the state has established 51 Crisis Intervention Units, 2 Trauma Shock units, and 354 mental health beds, challenges remain regarding public awareness of these resources and the need for better education and accessibility.
